The following is an extract from the story of Shoreham Grammar School, an independent boys school in West Sussex as remembered by P J Stannard and C N Wynne.

The years 1946-1965 covers the period at Shoreham Grammar School, Shoreham-by-Sea following the return from Milland House in Hampshire until the outbreak of the crisis which resulted in the school having to move away temporarily from Shoreham in 1965.

Although this period is called the E. A. Bruder era, the truth is that Emil Bruder's association with Shoreham Grammar School is a much longer one.

E. A. Bruder

He joined the staff in 1931 as an assistant master, became headmaster of the boarding section of the school at Milland House in January 1941, and was appointed headmaster of the reunited Shoreham Grammar School in September 1946.

After retiring in August 1967 he was elected to the School Council, and in 1971 he became Chairman.

Mr. Bruder used the velvet glove rather than the rod and he was fair in dealing with boys. Emil Bruder is highly respected by all boys who have been under his charge, and that over 46 years comprises a very great number.

He is held in very high regard by the staff who worked with him in his team. Here perhaps is the greatest compliment, that through all the troubles many of his team remained together.

Those seven men, and their faith, courage and determination are more than anything else the reason why Shoreham Grammar School survived its difficult time in 1965. They between them have over 200 years of service with Shoreham Grammar School.

It's amazing and a bit scary what you find in the ether these days. Sitting in Australia flicking around on an iPhone finding a story by Stannard about SGS. And seeing a picture of Bruder. So many memories. I remember being called to his lounge at 11:00pm because my mother had sent a telegram from Switzerland. "I hope the news is not too bad boy". I opened the telegram and read to my horror; "David, put a jumper on. I'm cold". "Are you alright Ellis"? "Yes Sir. Thank you Sir. I'll be alright". And the next morning at breakfast everyone was nice to me.
