This short yet poignant memory was emailed by P Davison of Portsmouth, and illustrates how things appear relative to one's size.

I remember as a child being taken to play and eat a picnic lunch in Portsmouth's Victoria Park, when we went on trips to the City from Gosport.

I remember the animals, the greenhouse and the tree, around which my sisters and I played. It's very tall now.

It was some 30 odd years between my childhood and my moving to Portsmouth so it was quite a shock on visiting the park again to see the tree so much taller.

But the thing that puts it all into perspective, growing up that is, is my memory of the grey stones that border the flower beds on the Edinburgh Road side of the park.

How big they seemed in those far off days of childhood. Sitting or climbing on one gave the feeling of sitting atop Table Mountain.

Now I look at them and they are so small really...........

P. Davison, Portsmouth 2001.
