This is an extract from a booklet written by Charlie Hutchins in 1989 where inhabitants of Portsea give an impression of the life and times of the suburb in the1920's and 1930's, a neighbourhood that had great character and a wonderful comradeship.

I lived in Prince George Street, but went to the Beneficial Society School. I did all my schooling there. I can remember the head Archie Mills and some teachers: Mr. Bell (Ding Dong) and the two Thomas brothers. On Good Friday we would assemble at school, then march to St. George's Church where hymns and prayers were said. Then back to school through the centre hall and collect a hot cross bun, then out of the gate and home.

It would not do to pass on without mentioning the faggot shop old Dick Hutchins it was, and they were the best in Portsea. People came from all parts to get them and I have seen queues outside that shop in Cross Street. When they were bought from the cooking store to the shop the aroma was beautiful. I used to follow it along the street sniffing like one of the Bisto Kids. They were big and cheap and made a wonderful meal at a penny each.

When I left school, on the Friday I started work at Hooper's on the Monday. This was the fish shop. I stayed there for about two and a half years at 5/- a week, later I went to work at Barrett's the chemist in High Street. I only earned the same money but the smell was much better!
