I remember as a child visiting my grandparents in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, reminisced Margaret McGregor.

On one particular night the distress flares from a fishing boat went up.

Since many of my grandfathers' relatives were fishermen, we went down to the foreshore to watch the lifeboat going out.

The seas outside the breakwater were mountainous and I remember the way my heart leapt to my throat watching this small boat leaving the safety of the bay to fight its way to save the foundering herring boat.

I do not remember the outcome of that night but it was not an infrequent occurrence of that port.
