Alan Earwaker was born at Ilford in Essex in the year 1948 and used to live at 225 Kingston Road, Ilford. He went to Golfe Road Primary School and then to Cleveland Road Junior.

From there he went on to Loxford County Secondary in Eton Road, Ilford, together with two good friends, Barry Hill and Stewart Smith, from 1959 to 1964.

Our teachers were as follows, wrote Alan:--
Form 1A 1959-60 Mr S Hosking
Form 2A 1960-61 Mr KJ Shave
Form 3A 1961-62 Mr JS White
Form 4W 1962-63 Mr JS White
5th form 1963-64 Mr. Hutchins

Do you remember these pupils in our year (1959 to 1964)? :- Colin Anderson, Trevor Barnard, Phil Chandler, Bob Clemence, John Dowers, Grint, George Jones, Alan 'Rick' Lee, Geoff Martin, Brian McCarthy, Alan Norris, Ed Nunn, Claus Ohmke, John Parrish and 'Knobby' Parsons.

Others included Neil Patten, Mick Perry, Pullen, Barry Richards, Colin 'Bill' Smart, Trevor Spurling, John Stansfield, Ian Stephenson, Eddie Steward, Rex Whitham, Richard Wilson, and Ken Piper, who unfortunately died in an accident while working in Australia.

I think that by now all the teachers we knew are dead.

Mr. E.R.Lower was the head. If I remember rightly Mr Lower's first name was Ernst. Does anyone remember his School Secretary, I believe her name was Miss Griffiths, a lady then in advancing years.

I remember him well as he caned me on numerous occasions. I recall that if you were sent to Lower you would be alright. 'Thank god for that', one would utter, as one went to Mr Lower's door. When he caned you he only tapped you.

It was different when a master told you to go and get the 'cane and book.' I wonder what happened to that book? I would dearly love to see it. I remember his secretary who sat in the outer office and I remember the inner office.

He wasn't so bad was old Mr. Lower. I met him in 1985 and he was alive and well in the better part of Dagenham.

Reggie Stubbs was deputy head when we were there. Who remembers this wonderful storyteller (supposed to be a maths teacher)? We learned more about the war than anything else. As for 'Stubbsie' all I remember about him was his egg-shaped head.

Remember the stories about his brother? He must have had about 15 in all. The Army, Navy, Air Force and goodness knows where else. What about the Maths books? - Biggs & Vidal.

I particularly remember Stubbs and visualise him looking something like that bald-headed sales assistant in the TV programme 'Are you Being Served'. He spoke with a whistle! His classroom had a ceiling that was
covered in ink blots -- remember?

What about the time that some of the kids took Stubbo's bike to bits? Do you remember his telegram message story about the wife who purchases a mink coat?

Goes something like this:-- Wife is in Paris and sees mink coat but quite pricey. Sends telegram to husband asking if she can buy it. Husband sends telegram back saying 'No price too high' and not 'No! Price too high.' Do you remember, he must have told us about 10 to 15 times in 3 years!

I wonder if the whereabouts of Mr Lower's daughter is known. Her name might have been Cheryl. She sent me a letter which probably showed some romantic interest and I replied rather dismissively. As a result Mr Lower called me into his office and gave me a rollicking for being insensitive and inconsiderate, which I suppose I was. Looking back 65 odd years I think I owe her a belated apology.
I attended Loxford from 1947 to 1952 and was probably in Form 5 at the time, which was the final year of an extended course and was the first time this was introduced to give boys an additional year so as to do 'O' levels and leave age 16 rather than 15.
If anyone is interested I do have quite a good group photo of the boys in this class with their names.
