Although Walter Uden was born in London in 1922 he was to spend his formative years in the north.

He lived at Hill Street in Farnworth, Lancashire when he went to Queen Street Elementary School and later to Harper Green Central School. It is from this era that Walter recalls a particular mate of his, Jack Ashworth.

When Walter's family moved to 21 Abbey Grove, Bolton, Lancashire he attended Whitecroft Road Junior Secondary School. The name Harold Smith from Astley Bridge in Bolton comes to the forefront of Walter's mind when you mention Bolton.

Joining the army, Walter served in the 70th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, 20 beach group R E M E, H Q R E M E 1st Corps.

In Civvy Street he became a painter and decorator, firstly in Bolton, Lancashire and then in Durham City, Co Durham, when he moved to
Witton Gilbert, County Durham.

Two more people who Walter knew well were Roy Bamborough in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and Eric Osborne in Wallesey, Cheshire.
