I came into this world on January the 10th 1924 at 56 Canterbury Road, Perry Barr, Birmingham, recounted Keith Shorland. I recall little of those early years except that I suffered a mastoid problem and was hospitalised for some time, and was thereafter admonished never to get into fights in case my ears got damaged.

It did not prevent bigger boys clouting me! I remember howling and wailing when taken to my first infants' school at Canterbury Road and there is a recollection of me being stopped by a policeman for speeding on a three-wheel tricycle on the pavement.

I have always since then had great respect for the Law. Justification for early discipline indoctrination? I am not one of those fortunate people who have total recall of all incidents in their life, so this may be a somewhat difficult exercise for me to undertake.

However, perhaps some prodding of the few remaining grey cells may produce something. Some pictures appear of going to live with my Grandmother at East Park Road in Leicester and going to my next school.

I did not know my Father and saw little of my Mother as, of necessity, she had to work away as a Matron in a boarding school some miles away. So I was raised in a mostly Female environment and spoiled, which was of no help at all later in life. I suffered a few more clouts later in life on that score, particularly in my first months in the R.A.F.
