My mind goes back to when I was 7 years old. There was unrest in Europe at the time as Kaiser Wilhelm, the ruler of Germany, wanted to rule the world. His army and tanks had invaded the Low Countries - Belgium & Holland - and he had turned his sights on France. Britain went to their aid and declared war on Germany.
Our King George V and Kaiser 'Bill' as he was known, were cousins and bore the same surname and so on the declaration of war King George changed his surname to Windsor.
I lived in the City of Liverpool, a great seaport with a lot of warehouses. Blackout had been declared at night to make bombing more difficult. Our streets were lit by gas lights and each night the lamplighter came around with a long pole with a hook on the end and put them all out.
There were not many aeroplanes in those days, so we all depended on the ships for supplies and Germany depended on her submarines (U-boats) to torpedo our ships. They sailed in convoy to be protected as far as possible by our Navy.
This all seemed to go on for a very long time, but when I was eleven years old our School Head called assembly. We were told the wonderful news that the war was going to end and that at 11 am on 11th November the Armistice was to be signed. To celebrate we could go home on holiday. The lamplighter came round and put on all the lamps again - illuminations to remember!
