Mary Duffy (nee Deery) was born at Haverton Hill in 1950, lived at Bilsdale Grove and went to three schools: St Gerard's, St John's and St Michael's.

My father came over from Ireland, in the 1940's I believe. I never met any of his family although he often mentioned his aunt and his brother Tommy. He told us how she had brought them up after their mother had died. I am also not sure but I think she lived in Co Tyrone.

His father left Ireland and took his brother Tommy over to England with him, leaving my father alone with his aunt Mary. She looked after him until he was in his thirties, when he decided to come to England and search for his father.

He was in his thirties when he met my mother. He had lodgings a few doors down the street from her. My mother's maiden name was Coe. Her mother came from Seaburn, I think.

We all lived in Haverton Hill until it was knocked down in the sixties. Now we live in a little village a few miles from Haverton, called Billingham.

My father was a lovely man who worked hard all his life. His only fault was his bad temper. But with ten children and a very unsteady background we all now understand why he behaved the way he did and I don't think it has done us any harm.

I would love to hear from anyone that knew him and would have liked to have met his aunt Mary as I was named after her and he always spoke of her with lots of affection. So if anyone out there in Ireland or England knew her or my dad please get in touch. Thank you.

Mary Duffy, 2002
