'Lancing Guides were transferred to the Worthing Division and held a camp, which Lancing were invited to join. It was at Dawlish, Devon. As it was really a Guide camp, we older Rangers were looked on as helpers but, being the 'in betweens', not allowed to stay up with the leaders.
A friend and I, thinking 7.00 p.m. too early for sleep, decided to slip out for a walk to the beach. Alas the leaders of Guide camps in those days were too observant and our absence was discovered.
This was not the first time I was in trouble with the leaders. On a previous camp a friend and I went for an evening walk with some Rover Scouts and were found out. It was all very innocent, however, but we were still reprimanded.
After our return to Lancing I was summoned to report to the District Commissioner and, as I was considered a ringleader with a bad influence, was asked to resign. I thought it most unjust but realised I really had outgrown the Guides, but was also very sad as I loved camping and the outdoor life and had such happy memories.'
