'Now able to drive, after having passed my test the second time, I used to visit Auntie and Uncle in Maidstone, sometimes taking Colin with me, together with our dog Lassie.
I remember one occasion when it was pouring with rain and the windscreen wipers failed as we were travelling across Ashdown Forest. Colin had to lean out of the window and wipe the windscreen to give me visibility.
Later this year we mated Lassie and she produced nine puppies. It was so exciting and we all loved them, even when Bernard and I had to clear up their messes in the morning. I found it necessary to supplement the puppies' food, as it was rather a large litter. We fed them with a baby's bottle and they all thrived.
It was useful being able to drive as I could take Colin and Lynda to the Heene Baths where they belonged to the Worthing Junior Swimming Club who taught them to swim.'
Eve was a very independent lady, especially for those days, and was also devoted to her children.
