Years ago when a man came and dug a hole in the road, they were always seemingly doing it. Along would come a man with a pickaxe and shovel and start the hole, no one seemed to tell him why or where to dig it. In the evening he would go away and a chap would arrive on his bike, where he came from your guess would be as good as mine, some how or other a small hut a bit like a century box a brazier and several bags of coke would appear, this chap would light a fire in the brazier stacking high with coke then he would promptly sit down and keep his eye on the hole. All night he would sit there presumably to make sure no body fell in. Half the time there was no one to fall in it. I lived way out in the country no body went out much after dark. On very important holes he might even light a couple of paraffin red lamps and put either side. When one got up in the morning the night watchman was gone. This would go on until what ever they dug the hole for was done and then the man and the night watchman would disappear and dig and guard another hole I assume.
