Freda Martin was born in 1924 at Barrow-in-Furness. Her maiden name was Bispham and she went to Canada with her family and did not return until 1936.

They lived at various addresses in Canada over the years and Freda went to Woodlands (Junior) School in Verdun city.

When they returned to Britain, to Barrow in fact, Freda went to the senior school there, Victoria Secondary.

Throughout her working life she has had many jobs, including that of a waitress at the Co-op Café in Barrow, and also as manageress of a Turf Accountant in Barrow, where she stayed until she retired.

I myself did not serve in the Forces, but my late husband served in the R.A.F. for sixteen years and I did at times travel with him after the war.

People I knew included two school friends in particular -- Marie Plant and Ivy Carr, and also there is one couple from the Services who meant a lot to me -- Ray (Ricky)and Lily Richards from Coventry.

I have many memories but I can't think of any specific event at the moment, yet I am sure there are very many happenings in my 78 years which would raise a smile or two! I am sure I could recall them at a later date.

Freda Martin, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, 2002
