The following are memories recalled by Mary Smith, as recorded by Hanover Housing Association in their book 'Tale of the Century' published in 1999.

In the summer of 1960, my husband and I decided to take our young family on holiday on our second hand BSA Gold Flash motorcycle and sidecar. We had been saving up for months and due to our mode of transport felt very adventurous!

We chose our destination -- Teignmouth in Devon, booked a chalet, and packed up with suitcases, sheets, baby clothes, napkins, two children and the baby, began the journey. Our eldest son, then 10 years old, rode pillion behind his father, with a suitcase tied on behind. I travelled in the sidecar with my daughter behind and the baby to my side.

What an adventure! Stopping every 50 miles to see to the baby, visit the toilet or eat, nor to mention the motorbike overheating. We journeyed all day, but made it at last, arriving tired and weary at Teignmouth.

For the next five years we had family regular holidays on the bike, with break-downs and incidents each time. But what fun it was!

As the years passed we had a little more money and the children were growing up, so by 1964 the much loved motorbike and sidecar, although up-graded, would be full to bursting with family and luggage. My husband reluctantly exchanged it for a car, an Austin A55.

Sadly holidays were not quite the same after that, enjoyable but too predictable.
