'I remember the stares of people as we walked up Princes Street in our very short shorts,' Eve Farrant (nee Lisher) recalls. Born and raised in Lancing, West Sussex, Eve remembers one of her holidays when she was a ripe 21 years of age.
'I went on holiday in June of 1938 to Scotland. Alma Whittingham (whom I had gone to Davison's school with) and her sister, Phyllis Byne, had planned a touring holiday in Phyllis' Austin 7. I was invited to join them and we had a very enjoyable holiday.
Phyllis was the only driver and we would travel until she felt tired, whereupon we would obtain accommodation for the night, just bed and breakfast usually. Other meals we always made ourselves, finding some suitable picnic spot.
I had never travelled very far north and this opportunity of seeing more of England and also Scotland was greatly appreciated. I was amazed at the beauty of Yorkshire. We enjoyed going to the Exhibition at Glasgow, and were very impressed by Edinburgh. Whilst in Edinburgh I remember the stares of people as we walked up Princes Street in our very short shorts.
We travelled up as far as Loch Lomond before our return journey, calling at Blackpool on our return.'
I bet they had lots on fun on their 'girl's only' holiday, especially when wearing their short shorts.
