Having come across your web page and the article 'Concert Parties Recalled' (In the Worthing, West Sussex section) I must tell you how amazed I am at the accuracy of the mind of Beryl Andrews, when she spoke about the RITTE family having to change their name from RITTENBERG. It was changed at the same time as Battenberg changed to Mount-Batten.
The actual origins of my family being on the Polish border with Germany, Ritte was a predominantly Jewish name and the anti-Semitic feelings of the day were also a very strong reason as to why the name changed.
My name is Michael Forbes Ritte, the Forbes being placed in as a Christian name by my grandmother to identify all male descendents of her marriage.
My cousin Captain Ralph L Forbes-Ritte rtd (His father changed the Forbes) is studying a lot of formerly Jewish genealogy and is speaking at this years conference of the International Jewry 21st Genealogy Conference.
He has been doing research into our name, and of course Philip Ritte features prominently. I don't know if you are aware but we have some detail of Philip Ritte or Philip Rittenberg as a member of The Doyle Carte Company as early as 1901- 03 and later in 1909.
Thank you for placing the article on you web pages and it leaves me wondering if any of your current readers (perhaps somewhat ageing) who remember those concerts are still alive.
We would like it very much if we could meet up - and share some stories. I even have a tape of Philip Ritte singing 'I'll take you home again Kathleen'.
(Anyone wishing to contact Michael can do so through the editor of this site in the first instance)
