I remember it being a lovely summers day in August of 1956, wrote Bob Margetson. At the time I was a mere teenager, aged 18. My life long friend, Roy Ansell lived at Pitsea in Essex but he regularly came down to my house to stay the weekend. We did the usual things that teenagers did in the 50's. We especially enjoyed going to the pubs.

The lovely August day in question was on the Sunday, and as usual we went for a drink. I lived in Dames Road, Forest Gate and just down the road was a pub called 'The Holly Tree.' After getting our pint we decided that it was too hot in the public bar so we took our drinks and sat out in the pub's garden.

In one corner of the garden was an old 40-gallon drum, which was full of water. Attached to the drum was chain that dangled into the water. There was also a notice that was attached to the tank, which read... 'WARNING! Do NOT tease the water otter by pulling this chain!'

I dared Roy to pull the said chain. He slowly pulled the chain from out of the water only to find an old tin kettle attached to the other end of it.
