The following are memories recalled by Mrs P Heys, as recorded by Hanover Housing Association in their book 'Tale of the Century' published in 1999.

I was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. My parents had a large pork butchers business. We had a slaughter house, so the pigs were killed on site and my mother made the best pork pies in town.

Our shop was very popular and we had a regular order from HM Forces and also supplied the town's ladies' and gentlemen's colleges.

A day to remember was the day the Duchess of York (now the Queen Mum) visited our town in support of the Nursing Association. I was asked to present a purse to the duchess and naturally I was very excited. I would ask our customers to kindly contribute to the purse and was able to collect the sum of five pounds five shillings - this was a great deal of money in those days and I had the largest purse.

I had a dress specially made of crepe de chine with a matching 'Dorothy' bag. Behind the locked door of the nursery my elder sister taught me to curtsey correctly. On the big day, my mother wore a mauve velvet dress and I felt very proud as she watched me. My instructions were to put my purse and its contents on the table in front of the duchess, say nothing, and then return to my seat.

That was over 70 years ago and is a memory I still cherish.
