The following are memories recalled by Rameshbhai R Patel, as recorded by Hanover Housing Association in their book 'Tale of the Century' published in 1999.
 I was born in 1931 in Nairobi, Kenya. I went to India for my education and was there at the time of India's independence in August 1947 and when mahatma Gandhi died on 30th January 1948. His ashes were brought to Gujarat and I was most fortunate to have taken part in the ceremony.
In May 1948, I left India and returned to Nairobi to complete my studies. In 1950 I started my career in a British company in the accounts department, as a cashier and as a salesman, and came to know many people and exchange views on many things with people who were hard working and faithful.
 In November 1952 I married, and the same year Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip came to Nairobi and stayed in the Tree Tops Hotel. I still remember standing on the road as they passed through when the news came from London that King George had died. They returned to London straight away, and after the coronation ceremony she became Queen of England.
In 1970 I left Nairobi and came to London, at which time there were not many Asians here. I got a job with Philips and really enjoyed my work, people were very helpful and co-operative. The first time I went to see a picture in the theatre, I was very happy to see other Asian people there. I used to go and see Indian films and watch the cricket and football.
Now, we can go to the temple and Mosque to practice our religion very freely and respectfully. That atmosphere makes me very happy and we feel that we are in our homeland. Here, people are very kind, helpful and most co-operative. This is my very personal experience.
Now I am retired and enjoying my retired life.
