I grew up on the St Heliers Estate, I remember going to Green Wrythe Lane infants' school during the war (I was born in 1939). We had to have a sleep in the afternoon and I had a picture of a duck on my pillow.
Sometimes the air raid siren would go off and we would all hold hands and run across the playing field to the air raid shelter where we would have to stay until the 'all clear' sounded. It must have been a nightmare for the grown-ups.
The war ended and I continued school at Green Wrythe Lane until I was 13, when I went to Winchcombe Road for a secretarial course. I remember the shops at the circle, the fish and chip shop where we could buy 3d worth of chips and soak them in vinegar.
I think the proprietors at that time were named 'Shepherd', we all used to take bets on what colour her hair would be!! I also remember 'Ted' who had the sweet shop at the circle, it was a van or sometimes in his front doorway. As I grew older I remember the Welbeck Road boys and going to The Locarno, and having my hair done.
Has anyone mentioned the Morden and Carshalton children's outing that used to occur every year, about 56 coaches used to go down to Littlehampton.
It was to allow every child to have a visit to the seaside and the cost was only a donation...if you could afford it! We had free rides on everything at the funfair and a packed lunch, it was amazing, we looked forward to it all year long!
I see you live in Worthing, it is a lovely place, I was there a few years ago but my early memories of going there are on the Surrey Coaches for a day trip.
